Share happiness and help others.

Since 2003 Wenche has supported the Makedonia High School in Congo with friends and colleagues through the Urafiki organization.

How is the organization supported?

  • Money is collected with different actions, e.g. through the income from flea market sales
  • The holiday home Rotdorn supports the Makedonia High School with donations and the sale of Norwegian knitwear.

With your visit of the holiday house Rotdorn you support the Makedonia High School,

because 2,00 Euro per overnight stay will be donated!

What else can you do?

  • Buy a pair of knitted socks or a colorful Norwegian cap have a nice memory of your holiday on Fehmarn. The proceeds go straight to the high school!  Just talk to us and try the socks or cap right away!

Did it happen like this...?

A long journey

Amani and Tumaini were born in Norway. They are migratory birds and every winter they fly from Norway to warm countries to hibernate there.

Both are very much looking forward to their great journey to Africa.

In October they take off and fly all over the country to collect all their fellows. It's getting more and more. Soon there will be several hundred, perhaps even a thousand friends, who will wander through the air like a gigantic black carpet and perform wave-like spectacles.

They learn to do this at school in Norway. There all children go to school and learn for their lives.

Amani, Tumaini and their friends are on their way.

They fly over the Baltic Sea. After leaving Denmark behind them, they reach the beautiful island of Fehmarn in northern Germany. There they meet many more friends. Because here the starlings, like many other migratory birds, stop every year on their journey to Africa.

They have a lot to tell each other, because many of them have already been to Africa.

The two friends eagerly listen to their stories. Everything they hear sounds so beautiful and exciting.

However, one of her friends says that there are far too few schools there for the children.

Amani and Tumaini can't understand this and become very sad. There's no such thing, they think. They talk about it day and night.

Then another star tells us there are people in Norway who have decided to help. They donate money, sell at flea markets, knit socks and caps, which they also offer for sale. They send this money to the Congo.

"That's interesting," Amani thinks. "But why are they sending the money so far away? "In Norway and Germany, they have problems too." A star looks at him and says: "That's right, but here every child has the opportunity to attend school, not there".

"But is the money even getting there?" Tumaini wants to know.

"Yes," says another star, "because there is an NGO organization* called Urafiki, that is Swahili and means friendship". It is a friendship between Bergen in Norway and Bukavu in the Congo. This money will be sent directly to the NGO Urafiki in Congo and invested in school construction. People need knowledge to manage and organise their country independently.

Congo is very rich in natural resources, such as cobalt, coltan and gold. These mineral resources are being stolen by the Western powers. The Congolese do not have the knowledge to extract their treasures. We need these materials urgently. Because without these natural resources no mobile phone or iPad works.

Amani and Tumaini listen attentively. Suddenly a star says: "I heard there are people here on Fehmarn who want to help."

They find that very exciting. Who are these people, and where are they?

You set off with some friends and fly over the island. They look everywhere and they notice a house built a little differently. It's painted Scandinavian red.

You sit down in the old, gnarled hawthorn and hawthorn trees and watch the people sitting on the large, cosy terrace. On closer inspection, they discover the doors and lamps they have built themselves in the house. You will also notice the self-made pictures. Tumaini looks even closer and says: "Here we are right. See those self-made birds? "They look like us and wear Norwegian and Congolese clothes."

They ask a pheasant who walks over the crease almost every day. He tells them that the hosts, Wenche and Thorsten, have fulfilled a dream with these holiday homes. They are aware of how lucky they are to create such a thing. And they want to share this happiness, beyond all borders. It should give people the opportunity to learn and the hope that at some point there will be peace on earth. For this hope to grow, the children need knowledge.

The pictures of the birds were painted by fifteen and sixteen-year-old students in the Congo.

Your hostess, Wenche, has supported Urafiki for ten years. She has close contact with the management of Urafiki in Norway, who regularly travel to the Congo to see the projects.  Through a collection campaign, Wenche and her friends gave more than 200 children the opportunity to sit at tables on benches instead of on the dusty floor. Now whole schools are being built there.

Also with your vacation you support the project, since 2 Euro per overnight stay are donated.

Maybe there are some people who want to give something extra or who want to support the project by buying homemade Norwegian socks. Just talk to Wenche or Thorsten!

Amani and Tumaini are very moved by what they hear and so enthusiastic that they immediately set off with all their friends towards Africa.

Once there, they tell their stories to all those who live there.

They listen very attentively and in their eyes a piece of hope (Tumaini) for a better future sparkles and that one day there will be peace (Amani) with them.
